AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry's communications director, Robert Black, announced Monday he is leaving the Republican governor's office to go into private business.

Black said he will form his own consulting firm that specializes in public affairs and political and strategic communications beginning in September.

He has been an aide to Perry for the past five years, serving as the governor's deputy press secretary, press secretary and communications director. Black also has worked in Perry's political campaign office. He has been in political and government communications for more than 12 years.

Perry in a prepared statement called Black "an indispensable clear voice and trusted advisor in my administration."

"Gov. Perry's tenure has been marked by bold ideas, unflinching actions and clear results, and I am proud to have played a small part," Black said.

Black was communications director for Attorney General Greg Abbott's 2002 campaign, director of public information at the Texas Department of Insurance and communications director for the Republican Party of Texas.

He worked in Washington, D.C., for then-Majority Leader Dick Armey, and as a press aide to Ari Fleischer at the Committee on Ways and Means. He was an aide to two Texas state senators and began his career as a legislative assistant to Republican Rep. Tom Craddick, who has since become Texas House speaker.
